KFC advertisement in Australia sparks race row

The Australian arm of the fast food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken has had to withdraw an advertisement after accusations of racial insensitivity.

[…]

When the advertisement reached America via the internet there were complaints.
It was accused of reinforcing a derogatory racial stereotype linking black people in the American deep south with a love of fried food.

Picked up by the American media, the advertisement immediately stirred controversy, because it was alleged to have perpetuated the racial stereotype that black people eat a lot of fried chicken.

It is the second time in three months that something broadcast in Australia has caused a racial stir in America.

Dear America: the world does not revolve around you; please pipe down and shut the fuck up about things that don’t concern you. Kthx.

  1. As an American, I don’t know how many times I’ve heard my fellow countrymen brag about the great tolerance Americans have.

I can tell you that that is not anywhere near accurate.

Americans are the most easily offended people on Earth, and I have traveled far and wide.

And, it’s our own fault. We have given power to sue for just about anything. That along with the uncontrolled graduation of tens of thousands of hungry lawyers from US law schools every year, there is no end in sight to the American ability to find new ways to be offended.

So, as much as I love my country, I have to say I am not just a little upset with the small minds in America that translate everything into a framework of victimhood.

Want to be an American. Make sure that unless everything is 100% the way you want it, sue.

  2. It’s not just America, aboriginal groups here in AU got incredibly offended because some Russian Ice skaters dressed in aboriginal themed costumes.

But as one blogger said, ‘I don’t think the Aborigines have any claim on poor costume design’.

We should all lighten up a bit.
